[Battlefield 2] Update v1.50 Beta 2 launched

Takk til Battle.no for lånet av bilde.

Thanks to everyone on the Battlefield forums that have taken part in Battlefield 2 Beta 1. We have taken a lot of feedback and made more fixes to come up with Beta 2. Bjorn has made modifications to Operation Blue Pearl so be sure to give your feedback on the new layouts HERE.

Since Beta 1 this is what we have changed, updated and fixed:

* Consensus to revert to 0.3 second delay between jump and prone - Fixed
* Mouse wheel acceleration on jeeps and APC’s - In Test
* Mouse wheel acceleration on parachutes - In Test
* Falcon controller prevents joystick controls being assigned to work especially on jets and helicopters. Falcon always acts as primary controller for pitch and roll. Resets to Falcon at the start of every round. - Fixed
* The jets on Highway Tampa were replaced with attack choppers in 1.50 - Fixed, Highway Tampa is now as it was in 1.41
* The graphics for Highway Tampa are the same as Mashtuur City on create a local match in the menu and load screen. - Fixed
* Picking up the kit of a player who disconnected causes crashes - In Test
* Audio settings do not always save after clicking APPLY - Fixed
* Registry Version remains at 1.4 after Update 1.5 is installed - Fixed
* BF2OpenAL.dll was version 1.1.1.0 - Fixed - Updated to version 2.1.8.1
* ch_gas_station collision mesh on Dragon Valley was inconsistent with other gas station buildings - Fixed
* MEC artillery piece on Operation Clean Sweep changes to the USMC's control when they capture the Airfield flag - Fixed
* Challenger2 HUD icon was incorrect showing M1A2 HUD icon instead - Fixed
* Road to Jalalabad has PLA FAV spawn in place of a MEC FAV - Fixed
* Dragon Valley Chinese artillery used default respawn time instead of 360 seconds as other artillery uses - Fixed
* Bizon (PP-19) had no delay time after weapon switch - Fixed (this now has a delay of 0.666)
* F35B had a lock delay of 1.5 compared to 1 second lock delay of other aircraft - Fixed
* Incorrect camo Humvee was being spawned in Taraba Quarry - Fixed
* UH-60 (Black Hawk) guns had 0.25 splash damage setting, down from 3 making it difficult to hit infantry. - Fixed (this is now set to 1.5 to improve the UH-60's usefulness while not allowing it to dominate)
* It was impossible to pass a claymore unless an engineer disarmed it first. - Fixed (players can now go prone to pass the claymore)
* Allow BF2.exe to use more than 2Gb RAM on machines that support it - Fixed

You can also track what we are doing directly on the Battlefield forums HERE.

[Battlefield 2] Bjorn Sundell Operation Blue Pearl feedback

So, the beta of update 1.50 is out. The point of having a beta is of course to get feedback from all you players out there. And as the level designer of Operation Blue Pearl I of course am interested in how the map plays. I don’t know if you read my earlier statements on the map design, but one of my main concerns was (as proven now) the crucial map start. It’s really hard to do a perfectly balanced beach landing that should almost, but never be, impossible to pull off. Especially without testing it a lot – and that’s what the beta is for… I knew I would get feedback on this and the earliest reports showed that some of you felt it was too hard.

So, to get the ball rolling on this and get passed negative, non-constructive comments, from the top of my head - here are my ideas on how to resolve the issue and what I see these changes will bring to the table. Please discuss them, come up with other ideas how to make the beach landing work:

- The temple flag belongs to US at beginning (We miss out on the beach landing part of the flag)

- Remove the first control at the temple (PLA would have to constantly “refill” the front to hold it, giving the US a really good chance at landing. On the other hand, if US don’t succeed in capping the flag at the Old town square they’re going to have to restart at the home base again)

- Start the temple flag as neutral (PLA would have to race and capture it and if they manage to it’s going to be tougher for the US to push them back. In this case the US will have one “window of opportunity” on taking the flag. This could result in an interesting experience and urgency for the US to cap it on the first try. On the other hand, it they don’t succeed where at where the map is right now.)

- Add some ships in the center of the canal close enough to allow for US snipers to take out Chinese soldiers at the temple and to provide cover for the ribs and APC:s moving across. Placement should allow for US but disallow for Chinese sniping. This could be used in combination with the first three ideas.

As I’ve explained in an earlier post, the Fog-of-war is an inheritance for the game still having to support the minimum rig way back from 2005. The map, being set where it is in a city, can’t allow for a greater view distance.

To leave your own feedback head over to the Battlefield 2 Forums - http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/battlefield-2/544569-operation-blue-pearl-feedback.html

APRIL SPØK!
1.April..

Soldiers of Resurrection besluttet å gjøre samabeidet til noe konkret.

F-Secures variant for å fjerne Conficker kan du laste ned her.

Battlefield – Inside the Design

Why?
Reading the feedback you guys give us in the gaming forums, it’s been clear to us that the game was lacking in a tight infantry map with the PLA army involved. So we set out to create a map with that in mind and this is the result of that. That map, which we have called Operation Blue Pearl, will appear in the upcoming Battlefield 2 Update 1.50 and Battlefield 2142 Update 1.51.

Limitations
As some of you probably know, BF2 has been around for a while and many of the current players have rigs that can run the game at high settings. But to us, creating official content, we still have to keep the low specs of the game in mind designing a map.

That’s where the “fog of war” comes in. When we make maps here at DICE we are constantly using programs that check draw-calls on our maps so that, wherever you position yourself on the map, the draw-calls never exceed the maximum limit. (A draw-call is when the game engine must call a texture image into the graphic card’s memory for it to be rendered on screen. The more draw-calls the game must make, the more it impacts computer performance so limiting these is one of the cornerstones of game production.)

In order to make a tight city-feel map you need a certain object density. The only way to get that is to use fog to “cull” distant objects.

This also prohibits us from using air vehicles on this kind of map. On ground level, your view is often blocked by buildings and other objects, keeping the draw-calls in check. If you would use an air vehicle you would get a free 180’ view of the city which would make the draw-calls exceed the maximum number.

The setting
Even though this new map reuse all content from the original game we’ve tried to come up with something that we hope will feel fresh for you. As already mentioned the map gives you an infantry, city setting with the PLA army, which hasn’t been present in the game before.

We’ve also dug deep in the vaults of what we’ve got here at DICE and tried to bring up some of the objects that weren’t used as frequently in the original release, spotlighting these to hopefully give you a new experience.

We here at DICE also felt that BF2 lacked a map with a beach landing scenario – like “Omaha Beach” in BF 1942. That’s why we’ve made this map into a beach landing and hopefully you guys will enjoy that experience.

Feedback from beta testing
As we roll this map out in open beta we are very interested to know what you players out there think about it. Can we make changes that would make the map better and of course, find any bugs left in the map. If you’re interested in making this map a better experience for all, please give us feedback.

Going into a feedback session there are a few things that have to be kept in mind. The main thing is to understand what experience this map wants to convey – a grinding, hard push of infantry fighting through an urban setting. I.e. – that map should be fun to play as infantry. That’s its main focus. The vehicles in there should add a flavour to the map, but not ruin the infantry experience.

With that said, our main questions are:

Does the beach landing work?
For the landing to work it’s absolutely crucial that the US troops don’t get owned by PLA AT:s. We know this is a risk and that’s one of the main feedback points we need to get from you guys – is the beach landing successful. Keep in mind it should be hard, but not impossible and boring.

Is it too easy to back-cap the Chinese home base?
With an assault map, the experience we’re looking for is a gradual grind that slowly moves the battle to the back of the map. We’ve left a sneak hole to get past the front in case the front flag is to heavily defended, but this shouldn’t be a too easy way.

Bugs
These annoyances always seem to sneak through. There will be areas where you can get stuck, get into objects and so on. Please, feedback on these too.

Thanks in advance!

To nye «Battlefield»-spill avduket

KALD FORTSETTELSE: Snødekte fjell er blant nyhetene i «Battlefield: Bad Company 2». Foto: DICE/EA
